Mangroves: Breaking Silos

  • 58 Park Avenue New York, NY, 10016 United States (map)

The Mangrove Breakthrough, an ambitious multi-stakeholder initiative, was launched on September 23 during Climate Week New York City to address the underfunding of mangrove protection and restoration, which has led to the loss of over 1 million hectares since 1996. Recognized as vital Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for climate resilience and biodiversity, mangroves are critical for carbon capture, livelihoods, and coastal protection. The initiative aims to secure $4 billion and protect 15 million hectares by 2030, emphasizing cross-sector collaboration, sustainable finance, and policy integration. Building momentum from COP28 with task forces and an Advisory Council, it targets continued action at CBD COP16 and COP29.
